VANDERBURGH COUNTY, Ind. — Prosecutor Diana Moers announces that on Friday, February 13, Larry Richmond Sr. was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the 2019 murder of Evansville Firefighter Robert Doerr.
Following Richmond’s trial in December, a jury found him guilty of Murder and Conspiracy to Commit Murder, recommending a sentence of Life Without Parole – a recommendation that the court was required by statute to adopt.
Richmond’s co-conspirator, Elizabeth Fox-Doerr, was also found guilty of Murder and Conspiracy to Commit Murder at trial in 2024 following the shooting death of her husband.
Doerr was gunned down outside his own home after just finishing a shift on February 26, 2019. Prosecutor Moers called Doerr’s murder a plan that was impossible without teamwork, establishing Elizabeth Fox-Doerr as the link between Richmond and Robert. Through years of work and investigations, evidence gathered against Richmond and Fox-Doerr secured guilty convictions for both.
After Richmond was sentenced to life in prison on Friday, members of Robert Doerr’s family delivered powerful victim impact statements that shed light on how his tragic loss will affect them for the rest of their lives, while also expressing relief knowing that justice had finally been served.
“Larry Richmond Sr. has now been convicted of the murder of Robbie Doerr. He has taken the life of a father, grandfather, brother, and beloved friend and firefighter from this community and all who loved him will suffer with that forever. We hope that the guilty verdict and the verdict of life without parole brings some peace and healing to the family, friends and colleagues of Robbie,” Prosecutor Moers commented.
At the time of Robert Doerr’s murder, Richmond was out of custody on probation after being convicted of a separate murder.
“Filing a request for life without parole is a serious undertaking and the law only allows for it in certain circumstances. Larry Richmond has taken the lives now of two innocent men—killing Robbie Doerr just 9 months after his release from prison and, in addition, met the statutory factor of lying in wait for Robbie Doerr to come home from his extra shift at the hose house in the dark,” Prosecutor Moers continued.
Multiple different agencies and investigators within our community worked together to ensure justice for Doerr by contributing to the investigation that led to Richmond’s conviction: the Evansville Police Department, Evansville Fire Department, the Vanderburgh County Prosecutor’s office’s cell phone lab investigators, the Indiana State Police, and the FBI all played crucial roles. “The investigation lasted years and the results speak for themselves—we built a rock solid case and we are pleased the jury rendered a verdict of guilty as charged and then granted our request for life without parole,” Prosecutor Moers said.
Prosecutor Moers and Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Stan Levco represented the State of Indiana in the case against Richmond, and the Honorable Magistrate Judge Celia M. Pauli presided.
